Juliana Vélez is a PhD student in Conservation Sciences at the Department of Fisheries, Wildlife and Conservation Biology of the University of Minnesota. She received a Fulbright Scholarship (2017-2022) for doctoral studies, the Russell E. Train Fellowship from the World Wildlife Fund (2017) and the Interdisciplinary Center for the Study of Global Change Fellowship from the University of Minnesota. Her PhD project will be focused on improving wildlife management by addressing coupled human and natural systems in the Colombian Orinoquía Region. She will collect satellite telemetry and vegetation data that can be used to parameterize models of animal movement and habitat selection, to better understand the impact of habitat loss and land use changes on tapirs.
